What is Spot UV Coating? How Can It Benefit Your Brand?
In the highly competitive retail environment, custom packaging serves as your first handshake with a potential customer. Therefore, choosing a finish that demands attention is vital. But what exactly is spot UV coating?
In simple terms, this popular surface printing method applies a clear, liquid ultraviolet coating only to specific, designated areas of your package rather than covering the whole sheet. Afterward, high-intensity UV light rapidly cures and hardens the liquid. Consequently, this process leaves a flat, ultra-shiny glossy layer on elements like your brand logo, corporate tagline, or artwork patterns, while leaving the rest of the box with a clean, non-glare matte backdrop.
This dramatic, reflective contrast immediately draws the consumer’s eye right to your key marketing messages. Furthermore, it creates a high-contrast physical depth that buyers can see and feel on the retail shelf. At Gerun Packaging, we utilize state-of-the-art automatic silkscreen printing presses to achieve flawless registration alignment. As a result, you receive crisp, razor-sharp edges on every single run of your premium spot uv printing packaging. Whether you want to highlight minimalist typography or add an intricate, hidden pattern that catches the light, this versatile method infuses instant luxury into any packaging design.
Key Features & Benefits of Spot UV
Exceptional Visual Contrast
By placing a reflective varnish directly adjacent to a dull background, you establish an instant focal point. This high-gloss finish makes colors pop with incredible vibrancy and sharp clarity.
High-End Tactile Appeal
Modern consumers shop with their hands just as much as their eyes. Hence, this localized coating gives your box a multi-dimensional raised texture that naturally invites people to touch and interact with your product.
Superior Smudge & Scratch Protection
In addition to aesthetics, the hardened polymer shield guards your vital brand elements against scuffs, fingerprint oils, and friction damage during long-distance transit.
Flawless Structural Adaptability
This finish bonds beautifully to a vast array of stocks. Whether you print on thin ivory board or heavy corrugated liners, the lacquer maintains its brilliant clarity without peeling or cracking over time.

Sustainability Benefits
As global regulations and consumer habits shift toward environmental care, choosing eco-conscious manufacturing methods becomes paramount. Fortunately, our spot UV coating process aligns with your sustainable goals.
Non-Toxic Formulations
Our liquid polymers contain zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therefore, they do not release harmful emissions into the factory environment or the atmosphere during the ultraviolet light curing cycle.
Full Recyclability
Because the cured gloss layer is incredibly thin, standard commercial de-inking and hydrapulping systems can easily separate the polymer from the natural paper fibers during regular recycling processes.
Waste Reduction
Our automated precision machinery minimizes fluid over-spray. Consequently, we conserve raw materials and keep your production footprint remarkably clean.
FAQ
Can I apply spot UV coating directly onto raw, un-laminated kraft paper?
Generally, we do not recommend applying this liquid coating directly onto uncoated raw paper or porous kraft sheets. Because raw paper fibers act like a sponge, they absorb the liquid polymer before the UV light can cure it, resulting in a dull, uneven smear. Instead, we apply a thin matte sealer or matte lamination layer first to keep the gloss perfectly crisp on top.
What is the main difference between Spot UV and overall UV coating?
The distinction lies entirely in the coverage area. Overall UV coats the entire surface of the sheet to provide general scuff protection and gloss. On the other hand, spot UV targets precise, isolated shapes like logos or specific text characters to build a dramatic visual contrast against a flat matte background.
Does spot UV cracking happen when the boxes fold at the creasing lines?
To avoid any unsightly cracking or peeling, our expert engineers design your artwork templates so that heavy gloss layers do not cross directly over deep folding scores or creasing lines. Furthermore, we utilize highly flexible polymer formulas that bend gently without snapping along structural edges.
Can I combine gold foil stamping and spot UV on the exact same logo?
Yes, you can achieve amazing results by layering these techniques. However, we must print them in a specific sequence. We stamp the metallic hot foil onto the paperboard first. Subsequently, we apply the clear spot gloss slightly overlapping or adjacent to the foil to anchor a striking, multi-layered luxury depth.
How fine or thin can the lines be for spot UV printing?
Our modern automatic silkscreen printing lines can easily handle fine detail work down to a line weight of 0.5mm. Nevertheless, we always advise against using ultra-thin fonts or microscopic hair-lines. This is because a slightly broader surface area allows the gloss to gather enough volume to reflect light properly and create that desirable tactile bump.
